Over the past seven years, the H.O. Porter Scholarship Association has honored numerous deserving Maury County young people with scholarships to attend the college of their choice.
Plans are now under way for the eighth annual Scholarship Banquet to be held at 7 p.m.
Saturday, April 17, at the Memorial Building in downtown Columbia.

Applications are still being accepted through March 31 for the eighth annual Northrop Grumman Corp. Engineering Scholars competition, which will provide a total of $240,000 in college scholarships across Maryland this year to promising high-school seniors interested in studying engineering.

A Bowl-A-Thon Fund-raiser for scholarships through the Clawson Police School Liaison program will be held at 8:30 p.m.
March 27, at Thunderbird Lanes, 400 W. Maple in Troy.
Participation cost is $25 and includes three games of bowling, pizza and pop.
There is a cash bar, and awards to be presented through 50/50 and other raffles.

The deadline for a new biotechnology scholarship at Northern Virginia Community College has been extended to April 15.
The Rividium Biotechnology Scholarship will cover full tuition and books for one student to complete the Biotechnology Program.
The successful applicant must be planning to enroll in the program full time beginning in fall 2010.

The U.S. Senate is poised to vote on a bill that would provide Louisiana college students with an additional $126 million in student aid during the next decade.
The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act would increase the amount of federal Pell grants for college students from $5,500 to $6,900 a year by the year 2019.
That amounts to a 25 percent boost for the 126,600 Louisiana recipients.

Texas high school seniors can earn cash for college by composing a 350-word essay suggesting additional measures to be used in the state's fight against litter.
Dow Chemical Company is partnering with Keep Texas Beautiful to sponsor the 2010 Don't Mess with Texas Scholarship Program.
High school seniors are encouraged to submit essays explaining how they tackled a litter-related problem in their own school or community.

No one was very happy about it, but a bill that attaches more rigorous standards to Florida's popular Bright Futures scholarship program passed a key committee test Friday.
Under the bill, tougher eligibility requirements would be phased in by 2014.
A student who loses the grant because of low grades would not be allowed to reapply.

The North Georgia Community Foundation is offering 120 scholarships totaling $195,000 to area high school seniors this year.
The scholarships will be awarded through 25 funds, according to Foundation President Jim Mathis.
"Some of them deal with sports, some of them deal with achievement, some of them [are for] at-risk students," said Mathis.

Bishop State Community College has cleared its last hurdle toward recovery from findings of academic and financial aid fraud.
College officials announced Friday that the U.S. Department of Education has removed the Mobile college from a process known as "heightened cash monitoring."
